Students injured as cops resort to lathi-charge during union election

Amid stray incidents of stone-pelting a few students received injuries when the Haldwani Police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the situation during polling for the student union elections of the MB PG College Haldwani here on Tuesday.

Among those who received injuries were a senior leader of  the ABVP, Deepak Sanwal. He received some minor injuries on his head. However, when asked how did he receive injuries on his head, Sanwal blamed activists of the Opposition party, NSUI, for causing these injuries. More so, he also accused the Haldwani Police of attacking the ABVP members in connivance with the NSUI activists. The Haldwani police is  supporting the Opposition NSUI activists, while our leaders are facing the lathi-carge, he alleged.

It was inevitable as the prestige of supporting parties like the Congress and the BJP was at stake as they were  supporting their respective student  wings the NSUI and the ABVP respectively in these elections, but some restraint from respective sides including  the enforcement staff and the supporters of the NSUI and the ABVP, on the day of voting for the student union elections of the MB PG College Haldwani, might have controlled the situation.

However, it could not happen and the Haldwan police had to resort to lathi-charge  towards fag end of the polling post lunch session around 1.30 pm to handle the situation during the polling here on Tuesday. The slogan- shouting and  taking out rallies in support of their respective candidates by the supporters of the aforesaid parties including the NSUI and the ABVP kept on going since morning as soon as the students started gathering around the periphery of the MB PG College complex where the polling was going on.

But as it was anticipated the police personnel on duty from the Haldwani police got into action and started to deal with the supporters of both the NSUI and the ABVP with heavy hands when enthusiastic student leaders could not restrict themselves from resorting to slogan shouting.

However, in the aforesaid student body elections, the main fight is believed   between the Surender Nagdali of the ABVP and the NSUI supported l S Panwar. It is worth mention here that ahead of the crucial lok Sabha elections, the student body polls here seem to be quite important for main political parties. Though no senior leaders of any main political parties were seen around the  polling site here today , they were quite anxious to know the outcome of the results of these student union elections.

The senior leaders of the main political parties here are of the view that the verdict of the student body polls definitely plays a crucial role in the main elections- whether it is the assembly polls or the general elections. Therefore, it is to be seen how is the verdict of the student body polls going to influence the results of the upcoming  general elections in 2014.

However, amid heavy police deployment the results of the student body elections are expected till late night on Tuesday.
