Student leaders wish to join mainstream politics

Published on:

Trying their luck in students’ union politics at DAV Post Graduate College, many leaders of the students union want to make it big in the mainstream politics. So, if you are in the lot that often says that charm of politics no more draws youths, better change your perception.

A total of three candidates eye the post of president. An equal number of candidates is interested for the post of students’ union general secretary followed by two for the post of vice president. Thus, a total of nine candidates are presently interested to try their luck for three important posts. Also, many are campaigning for the post of representatives in various faculties.

Irrespective of their

different political ideologies, the student leaders expressed their wish to join mainstream politics, if luck favours them. Campaigning to materialise their plan to emerge victorious, the union leaders, who are already in campaigning mode, take students union polls as a platform to learn ABC of the politics.

They strongly believe that it is the politician who can set wheel of change in motion. Swati Negi, one of the contenders for the post of the student union president, has future plans for joining the politics. “I want to enter the mainstream politics. For me, student politics is a learning ground that apprises us of the kind of hard work politics demands. It is not an easy task,” Negi said.

She is well aware of the fact that path of politics is full of ‘potholes’. “Nothing is certain in politics. Often, one has to make eleventh hour change in decision,” Negi, who was interested to contest as a candidate of NSUI, said. But she changed her plan after NSUI announced another candidate in place of her. Now, she would be in fray as an independent.

Siddhartha Rana, who is also in fray for the post of the union president as ABVP candidate, also feels that the student union politics provides a platform to the people to learn the politics. “Apart from serving the student, it provides an opportunity to the student leader to strengthen his or her base to enter politics.”

Siddhartha, too, wants to join the mainstream politics after completing his college. “I want to serve the people. And politics is the best platform for it,” Rana claims. He, however, is well aware about the fact that scenario in politics undergone a drastic change. But eventually, someone would have to take a call to set in change.

Apart from these two contenders, others in fray for the posts of general secretary, vice president, also want to make it big in politics. Well aware about the ups and down of politics, the student leaders are eager to tread on path of politics.
