Stone crushers: Activists flay Govt's apathetic attitude

Published on:

The agitators staging stir against the operation of stone crushers in Maletha and adjoining areas have sounded angry over the State Government remaining apathetic vis-à-vis the emotive issue.

Sameer Raturi, who has been staging hunger strike for the past few days on behalf of Save Himalaya Movement that is spearheading the agitation, alleged that despite the assurance of the Chief Minister Harish Rawat, no action has been taken to stop the stone crushers from operating in Maletha and its adjoining areas in Tehri district.

The agitators said that things are happening this way as a number of Ministers in the State has a share in the illegal mining pie. Sachidanand Sharma, a leader of the movement, said on Monday that they would take the stir to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in the coming days if the Government did not act on its assurances.

Sunder lal Bahuguna, the legendary leader championing the cause of environment has lent his full weight behind the movement, he claimed.

Meanwhile, the indefinite hunger strike of Sameer Raturi has entered its tenth day while that of gram pradhan Maletha Suryaveer Singh Bisht has entered its ninth day on Monday.

Taking lessons from the administration forcibly lifting Hemanti Devi from the hunger strike venue a few days ago, Raturi has confined himself in a room storming which would prove difficult for police.
