State's promises ring hollow, homeless continue to suffer

Those living on the roadside continue to face harsh conditions while complaining that past assurances of the Government for shelter have not been fulfilled yet.

More than eight families with 30 members in total live along the Raipur Road near Dalanwala Police Station and seven families with 20 members in total live on the roadside near Parade Ground. Their biggest worry is that they don’t own homes. Vikram Singh, who lives on the roadside near Dalanwala police station said that the condition of the families here is deteriorating with each passing day with no one coming forward to help them.

“We have approached the authorities in the past but have received nothing more than assurances of being provided homes. We hardly manage two meals a day with our limited income and our children are illiterate because we are not able to sent them to school. We have no ration card or photo identity card though we had submitted necessary documents six months ago,” he added.

Dharam Singh, living on the roadside near Parade Ground, complained that the authorities had only given them hollow assurances. “The State Government had promised us homes in 2003-04, but we are still living on the roadside. Our conditions are deteriorating and our children are being deprived of their fundamental rights due to our poverty. We request the government  to facilitate shelter and some land for us so that we can lead a better life,” he added.
