The legal and delimitation commission of Uttarakhand has recommended that the State should have one single law pertaining to land. This decision was taken in a meeting of the commission which was held at Vidhan Sabha auditorium on Friday. The meeting was presided over by the Chairman of the commission Jagmohan Singh Negi.

In the deliberation, it was put forward that the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and land Reforms act-1980 is followed in the State in which some amendments were made in the year 2016. In Kumaon and Jaunsar Bhabhar region different acts are functional which the commission thought are undesirable and it was decided to make a recommendation for uniform land reform act in the state  on Kanoon Diwas (26 November) to the State Chief Minister.

The members of the commission are of the view that the act of UP was implemented as it is when Utarakhand was carved out in the year 2,000 but some reforms are needed in the act in the context of the State. The necessary amendments for mountainous and plain areas should also be brought about in the act.

The Chairman of Commission, Negi said that the commission has received valuable suggestions from people for tourism promotion, involvement of local people during its visit of Badrinath on October 21 and 22 and Srinagar on October 24. He said that the commission would include these suggestions and the recommendation of people in its report to the Government. The commission is planning to submit the report by last week of November.

Negi emphasised the need to focus on preventing migration from the hills and said that the Char Dham Yatra and other religious spots like Jageshwar and Bageshwar should be linked with local employment generation and economic development. The commission has also sought recommendations of people to preserve rights of people residing outside on their ancestral land and usage of land left fallow in the villages of mountainous areas so that they can be incorporated in new land laws.

The commission would also submit a suggestion to obliterate obsolete and useless laws and suggest necessary recommendations to amend existing laws to the government. The members of the commission stressed the need of the effective implementations of the directives of state government on the recommendation of the commission. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairmen Ramesh Kapdi and Dinesh Tiwari.

The members Ram Singh Baseda, VP Kotnala, Dinesh Tyagi and Member secretary Bharat Bhushan Pandey were present in the meeting.
