State pvt colleges in quandary over new fee structure

Published on:

The failure of the centralised fee determination committee to decide the fees for Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) course has hit the private medical colleges of the State.

Interestingly the fees in most of the States in the country have been revised after the NEET 2017 and the increase in fee has brought relief to the private medical colleges. In Uttarakhand, the designated fees determination committee is trying to determine the fees of the private colleges of the State but even after much deliberation it is yet to decide the fees.

The private colleges of the State are in a quandary and uncertain about what fees will be decided by the committee. In Uttarakhand, Guru Ram Rai University and HIHT University both private institutions have medical colleges. It is worth mentioning here that the private colleges in the South and other parts of India are charging Rs 20- 25 lakh per year.

These private universities site the provision in the Universities Act in which it is mentioned that they can decide the fee on their own. They argue that as per the rules they should decide the fees and send is to the fee determination committee and the committee should clear it. However, in Uttarakhand stalemate continues and the fees of private medical colleges is yet to be finalised.

The delay in fees determination is hurting the interests of the State in the long run as low fees here would attract students from other States to the colleges located here and after completion of studies they would return to their home States.
