Sensational revelations are coming out in course of the probe being made by STF into the recent serial ATM heist at Roorkee. The investigation is making headway after Amit alias Jamiruddin who is supposed to have masterminded the serial ATM heist was arrested by a STF team from Siliguri. CO Roorkee Kuldip Aswal said several rounds of analysis of the ATM disc are going on and the results are astounding.
Notably, on August 30, taking advantage of the day being a Sunday, a gang comprising four tech-savvy miscreants had hacked five ATMs of State Bank of India (SBI), one after another, and looted about Rs64 lakh. With the help of some alert locals, police arrested two of them — Shafiq and Shanawaz. However, the mastermind of the gang Amit alias Jamiruddin and another Jonny, who is a driver, escaped. Since then, police teams had conducted several rounds of raids at many places across Delhi, Haryana and Ghaziabad to nab the duo. Amit was finally arrested from Siliguri in West Bengal.
Notably, the gang is supposed to have received training somewhere in Jharkhand. Its members had committed such heists in many other places previously, police said.
The probe progressed after Amit was arrested from a hotel in Siliguri on September 8 in course of an operation conducted jointly by Uttarakhand STF and Mumbai Crime Branch. He was produced in Siliguri Court on Wednesday. His three other accomplices — Javed, Kamal Chaudhary and Nagraj Kumar — have been arrested by Mumbai Crime Branch teams from a Mumbai-based hotel. Amit being given five days’ transit remand by Siliguri Court, he would be brought to Roorkee next week, something that would help things unfold.
Kuldip Singh Aswal, CO Roorkee informed that during the analysis done at a laboratory based in New Delhi, experts have concluded that once the transaction is completed by the account holder the data are saved and stored with the ATM machine for a short while. It is not deleted till a new ATM card is inserted in the machine for another transaction. Hackers have used this loophole to hack the secret code and loot the cash. Aswal added that more interesting revelations are in the offing with the analysis going on in full swing.
Aswal further said that the fourth member of the gang Jonny who is still at large will soon be nabbed. “We are on our toes,” he added.
