Staff deployed to safeguard British royals from jumbos

The Forest Department deployed staff along the road from Rishikesh to Narendranagar to prevent elephant movement from affecting the movement of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

The British royals reached Uttarakhand on Wednesday evening. The roads in the Terai region of Uttarakhand especially the highways around Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun are frequently crossed by pachyderms who are known to block traffic and at times act aggressively towards humans when provoked.

To prevent jumbos from affecting the journey of the British visitors from Rishikesh to Narendranagar, the department foresters and range officers posted along this road had been patrolling the area to ensure that elephants stay away from the road.

Though the jumbos kept away from the highway, in case the pachyderms had appeared dangerously close to the road, the staff would have fired in the air and used other conventional methods to drive them away from the road.
