St Thomas College, one of the oldest schools of the city, kick-started its centenary celebrations on Friday. The school established in the year 1916 has a glorious past.
Addressing the mediapersons on Friday, the Principal of the school and nominated member of Uttarakhand assembly, R V Gardner said that the school has reached many milestones in past and would continue to serve towards betterment of the society in general and students in specific in future too.
The Principal also gave a brief narrative of the school in the past which provided a glimpse of the school’s transformation from just being a three room school to an institution of national repute.
A pictorial detail of the progress made by the school in the past decades was also made on the occasion which contained a very old picture of the snowfall in the campus in year 1935.
Interestingly all the Principals of the school were women before R V Gardener took over in the year 1980. He said that very few girl students were in the school when he became Principal.
Gardener said that he started a special drive to recruit more girls by providing incentives as a result of which the ratio now is 10:7 (Boys: girls). He claimed that the school provides free education to wards of statehood martyrs and Kargil war heroes and said that the school is probably one of the only institution in the country which bears the cost of higher education (college) of its meritorious students.
A calendar mentioning the dates of the centenary celebration was released on the occasion by G I G Mann, the board member of institution and Principal of Carman School. The administrative officer of the school Amit Singh gave detailed account of the events listed in the centenary year. The Principal also unveiled a mascot called ‘Centum’ on the occasion.
