Road accidents occurring almost daily principally because of the dug-up roads, Dehradun SSP Sadanand Shankar Rao Date has directed the construction agencies, including the State Government departments like Payjal and power, to inform the police station concerned about the works involving roads in black and white.
“They must inform police about the time-frame of the repair and other works so that we learn when the craters are filled,” he said. The agencies need not seek no- objection certificates from the police department. Information given to police of the time the work would take would suffice, he added.
Aside from the craters gaping on the roads, over-speeding, rash driving, triple riding, drunk driving and dilapidated roads are leading to road mishaps. Statistics reveal that around ten persons died last month on various roads under areas like Doiwlala, Sahaspur, Mussoorie, Premnagar, Patelnagar, Ballupur and Cantt. Such a spurt in mishaps has left the police administration in Dehradun worried.
SSP Date said that the continuing loss of life and damage of government properties are resulting from the strings of road mishaps. “The construction agencies leaving roads dug up for days and even months are spawning many of such accidents. We would take action under appropriate sections of IPC against the errant organisations,” he said.
He said he has directed the police officers to take measures to improve traffic system in the city and to stop over-speeding to control accidents. Some decisions have been taken to improve things like fixing time during which the heavy vehicles will be allowed entry in the city. They would not be allowed to get into the city during the school hours.
In coordination with other departments, several more measures will be taken to improve the traffic system in the coming days, he assured.
There are around 10 units of City Patrol Unit (CPU) which have been pressed into service to enforce traffic regulations and they are being deputed on various roads where accident cases are on the rise, he said.
SP Traffic PK Rai said that CPU personnel are being deployed on the outskirts areas-Shimla Bypass, ISBT, Raipur Ring road and Premnagar of the state capital to check the menace of over-speeding vehicles taking tolls of lives and other violations of the traffic regulations. Equipped with alcometers, they are deployed at ten points like Rispana, Rajpur Road and Mussoorie Road after 10 pm to check drunk driving.
