Physical disability didn’t came into the way in the success of the visually impaired students of the Model School for Visually Handicapped at National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD), Dehradun as all its students secured I division in the class XII examination of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the result of which were declared on Sunday. What is even more pleasing is that one of a student, Mohammad Shahanawaz Alam secured 95 percent marks which is best ever in the history of the school located in the campus of NIEPVD (formerly called National Institute of Visually Impaired, NIVH). Belonging to a poor family which is dependent on farming Alam hails from Saharsa in Bihar. The school is closed due to the summer vacations and Alam too is in his native village these days. When informed about his splendid performance in the board examination over phone, he sounded very happy and said that his dream is to crack the prestigious Civil Services Examination. Alam secured 100 marks in favourite subject History while he got 96 marks in English, 95 in Hindi and Political Science and 89 in Social Science. If Alam was toast of the special school, Ayushi Sharma from Jammu impressed with 89.88 percent marks while Dev Narayan of Jharkhand got 88.83 percent marks. Three students of the school got 100 percent marks in History while four achieved this feat in music.
Talking to The Pioneer, the Principal of the school Kamal Beer Singh Jaggi said that this year 28 students appeared in the class XII examination this year out of which eight are girls. All the students secured I division, in fact 25 students got more than 70 percent marks, a commendable performance considering the fact that all these physically challenged students belong to poor families.
“The Institute plans to present a laptop every student so as to facilitate their higher studies. Also the student scoring 70 percent or more marks would be awarded a scholarship of Rs 2000 per month,’’ he said.
