Special police squad in drive to catch stunt bikers

Following the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Kewal Khurana’s decision to form a special task squad to catch the stunt bikers in the city, the police have also started preparing a list of mechanics who modify two-wheelers for stunt bikers.

Areas  like Rajpur Road, Jakhan, Mussoorie ring road, Sahastradhara Road, Turner Road, GMS Road, Kaulagarh area and Balbir Road are being monitored by the police. Khurana has also asked the squad to locate other places where the bikers perform stunts. The squad is assigned the task of locating these places and tracing the stunt bikers where upon their bikes will be seized.

The squad is also delegated to catch eve teasers who pass lewd comments on women. “We have informers in the targeted suburban areas where these stunt bikers are often spotted. Once they are caught, their bikes will be seized. Our team is also working on the list of mechanics who modify these bikes. Strict action will be taken against these mechanics,” said CO City, Harish Chandra Sati.

It should be noted here that in the past too the Doon police had held talks with such mechanics and warned them against bike modification for stunt riders. The police are now revising the list of such mechanics in the city in addition to which they are also scanning the internet for information or clips on the city’s stunt bikers.

However, the stunt bikers feel their actions are being misunderstood. “Stunt riders are not criminals, we are athletes and it’s our sport”,says Ayush Kohli. However, such riders also claim that the risk involved is lesser if it is done in a controlled manner. “We use various safety gear so that it does not harm us. In foreign countries, stunt riding is regarded as a sport and people enjoy it. It should be declared a sport because we are not harming anyone as we indulge in stunts on deserted stretches of roads in the city,” says Kohli.
