Dissident MlAs’ lawyer Chetan Chauhan said on Sunday that the Speaker’s action to disqualify them would not stand the scrutiny of laws as they have not been fully provided with the documents and recordings they had sought from the Speaker. “Besides, the documents provided to them are not certified,” he said.
“Despite our demand, Vidhan Sabha provided us with partial documents and even these are uncertified. As per the law, these documents are worth nothing. As per an apex court ruling, seven days are allocated to have these documents verified. Against the backdrop of the Speaker failing to meet our demand, the action on the part of the Speaker to disqualify us is illegitimate,” he added.
Notably, knowing that the procedure would take time, the dissidents led by MlA Subodh Uniyal and a lawyer had approached the Speaker well before the deadline expired on Saturday afternoon.
They had sought certified documents following which the Speaker had given them time till 9 am on March 27. However, the fast-paced developments climaxed in the Centre declaring President’s Rule in the State on Sunday.
