SP Singh rejoins Congress

Published on:

local leader SP Singh rejoined the Congress along with his supporters in the presence of Chief Minister Harish Rawat and Pradesh Congress Committee chief Yashpal Arya in Dehradun on Wednesday.

It will be recalled that Singh had contested the 2012 Assembly elections from Doiwala constituency as an independent candidate when he was not given the party ticket by the Congress to contest the polls. After former Haridwar MlA Ambrish Kumar rejoined the Congress in March this year and eunuch social worker Rajni Rawat rejoined the party recently, SP Singh rejoined the party at the Bijapur guest house here on Wednesday. Welcoming him back to the party, Chief Minister Harish Rawat said that this return is part of the efforts being undertaken to fight against “communal forces”. More political leaders and their supporters would be joining the Congress in the future too, added Rawat. Talking to media persons, Singh said that he felt happy as one would on returning home. He said that he had not rejoined the party for any position. It will be recalled here that Singh had sought the party ticket to contest from Doiwala Assembly constituency in the 2012 Assembly elections. However, when the Congress fielded former cabinet minister Hira Singh Bisht from Doiwala, Singh had revolted and contested as an independent. While BJP candidate and former CM Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ was elected from Doiwala constituency with 23,448 votes, Bisht had polled 22,176 votes and Singh had polled 11,241 votes.
