The authorities will harness solar energy to facilitate water supply in a mountain village here. For the first time, the Peyjal Nigam, Chamba is working on the exploitation of solar power to facilitate water supply to Chamthari village. It is hoped that the corporation will be able to successfully execute the solar water pumping scheme to take water up 200 metres of steep incline to benefit 45 families in the village. The project is expected to start operating within a month.

located in the Chamba development block in Tehri district, Chamthari village has been facing drinking water woes for many years now. The villagers had no other option but to walk some distance to fetch water from a natural source. This used to disrupt the routine of the villagers many of whom had to line up for water at the natural source since early morning. There is a natural source of water at Gadhainch situated not far from the Chamthari village. Water remains present at this natural source throughout the year. However, the steep incline from here was preventing the facilitating of water supply from here to the Chamthari village.

The residents of this village have for a long time been demanding a potable water scheme to facilitate the supply of water to the village. Now the Peyjal Nigam has started work on a solar water pumping scheme in the village to facilitate water supply here. The corporation will pump water from the nearby mountain stream to the village. Work has started on construction of 10,000 litres capacity storage tank near the stream.

From here the corporation will utilize solar power to pump water up a 200 metre steep incline into a storage tank from which distribution lines will be taken out. The special feature of the solar water pumping facility is that it’s operation will not be hampered by disruption in electricity supply. Village residents Sanjay Maithani, Pradeep lal and Totam lal opined that the villagers will breathe a sigh of relief once the solar pumping scheme starts supplying water in Chamthari. The Peyjal Nigam, Chamba, junior engineer Shailendra Bhandari informed that work on the solar water pumping scheme for Chamthari is expected to be completed within a month after which the water supply will be started.
