Following Western disturbances, the plains of Uttarakhand might have rains and the hills might see fresh spell of snowfall next week. Even Mussoorie where snowfall has remained elusive so far this season—save for a very brief spell on 14 January evening—might experience it in the real sense around this time.
Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre has forecast rains at isolated places in the plains while, according to the forecast, the higher reaches in the hills could witness rains and even snowfall from February 17 afternoon onwards for the next 48 hours.
Tourist destinations located in the higher reaches of the state may experience snowfall, met officials said. If Mussoorie misses snowfall this time it is most unlikely that the hill station that draws tourists from far and near all the year round would get covered under snowflakes this season. If this happens it would mark an unusual phenomenon for it, for heavy snowfall occurs here at least twice a season.
“We are wondering over why weather here is proving so quirky as far as snowfall is concerned. What happened in the evening of 14 January was far from being the snowfall the hill station is accustomed to. All of us are looking forward to it. Maybe, the rains would prove to be the harbinger of the real snowfall here,” said an hotelier based there.
Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre director Anand Sharma said western disturbances and induced cyclonic circulation over Haryana and neighbouring districts of Uttar Pradesh might trigger rains and snow.
