The seemingly innocuous snores may even point to serious health conditions and if ignored for long, snoring appears to be correlated to increased risk of serious cardiac problem or mental disease, opined the experts at a health camp on Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) at Mahant Indiresh hospital here on Thursday.
The Medical Superintendent (MS) of hospital Dr Vinay Rai said that in medical science, snoring is referred to as OSA. He informed that a Sleep Study Machine has been installed in the Hospital to carry out advanced test of OSA. Dr Rai said that patients would be able to know about the actual reasons of OSA by this machine.
The Head of Department (HOD) of Pulmonary Medicine, Dr Jagdish Rawat, said that all the patients with symptoms like snoring, sudden increase in obesity, more sleep in the daytime, sleeping while driving, not feeling fresh while waking up in the morning, extreme fatigue, lack of interest in sex, uncontrollable diabetes despite medication, people with small and fat neck are in a risk group and should consult doctor. The patients of OSA have increased risk of heart related diseases and increased Blood Pressure (BP).
“There is misconception in our society that OSA is a common disease and thus is overlooked. The patients must be well aware of the dangers of this disease. The OSA loosens the muscles of respiratory path which can result into obstruction in the tract and could induce break on breathing for some time. This condition is very fatal,’’ he said.
The hospital claimed that 102 patients were treated in the free health camp on the day.
