Rain has become a cause of fear for many people in the Bhagirathi valley in Uttarkashi district. The lack of proper treatment of the landslide zones that became active during the June 2013 disaster has caused most of these to become active once again this year. The situation is such that thousands of people across the villages in the Bhagirathi valley are spending sleepless nights for fear of disaster.
In Gangnani, the hill has reportedly begun to degenerate structurally which in turn has threatened the existence of the Hurri village situated about three kilometres above Gangnani. The land around the village has started developing cracks with the villagers being forced to keep awake at night in order to ensure swift action in case of disaster during the night.
The area of land subsiding in Chadethi village has also started to expand due to which houses in the village are now facing the threat of collapse. The condition of Chadethi, which was once considered the main halting point on the Gangotri pilgrimage, has deteriorated considerably due to landslides in the last two years. Whereas once there was many shops in the Chadethi area, now there are only a couple of shops open here and these too are at threat this year as the Bhagirathi river is cutting into the land from below while the threat of landslide continues to loom from above. Bhatwadi, Aungi,
Didsari, Syawa, Kunjan, Sanglai, Siror and other villages are also facing the threat of disaster. The villagers in Dhasda and Agoda in Kelsu Patti are spending nights in cattle sheds away from their homes.
