Skill orientation for courses in varsities needed: Governor

Published on:

There is a need to have reorientation in the curriculum and courses of the universities so that the youths are encouraged to develop skills, which will help them to become entrepreneurs rather than job seekers, said the Governor of Uttarakhand, KK Paul while addressing a convocation ceremony at the ICFAI university on Friday.

The Governor in his speech stressed the need for educational institutions to fire the power of imagination of their students and take them beyond the realm of grades and classroom study.  “Teachers have to encourage inquisitiveness among students and students must have a grand vision which they can, through research and inquiry, translate into reality. They must have a scientific temper,’’ he quipped. The Governor added that Private Universities should fund education of girls from weaker sections and all Universities must promote nation building programmes and youth must be encouraged to become entrepreneurs.

He said that teachers’ retreats or summer schools must be organised, core competencies must be identified and centers of excellence nurtured as any country’s progress and development is largely dependent and determined by the quality of its human capital and education thus will always play a decisive role in shaping the destiny of our nation. He also said that to make learning more effective, teaching pedagogy has to be refined, curricula up-dated regularly, an inter-disciplinary approach adopted and the evaluation mechanism has to be reformed.

He called upon the varsities to promote the programmes of nation building like adoption of villages, Swach Bharat Abhiyan, Digital India and Make in India.
