The agitating Shiksha Mitras have started a fast unto death in the Suddhowala and Haridwar jails. These Shiksha Mitras were arrested on Tuesday trying to rally to the Chief Minister’s residence.

The protesting Shiksha Mitras are camping in the old Raipur bus stand near the Parade Ground for many days. On Tuesday afternoon hundreds of Shiksha Mitras gathered at their protest site and tried to take out a procession towards the CM residence. The police stopped them and arrested them after mild use of force. State president of Shiksha Mitra Mahasangh, lalit Dwivedi told The Pioneer that the police took 110 Shiksha Mitras to Suddhowala jail and 86 to Haridwar jail. He said that 46 women Shiksha Mitras are also in the custody and all the arrested Shiksha Mitras have started a fast unto death in both the jails.

Shiksha Mitras were appointed in primary schools by the State Government in phases from 2008 to 2012 on a monthly stipend of Rs 1,300.Now the Shiksha Mitras are demanding that they should be absorbed in the Primary teacher cadre of the State Government. The recent announcement of the State Government to start recruitment process for 10,000 vacant posts failed to placate them as they wanted a specific Government order for their job adjustment.
