Despite the Government's emphasis on protecting the girl child rights in the society, the sex ratio continues to decline in Champawat district. According to the district administration of Champawat, the number of female in the district that was registered as 880 against 1,000 male in 2012-2013 came down to 878 female against 1,000 male in 2013-2014.

Sounding concerned over the decreasing sex ratio in the recent years in the district, the Champawat district administration has stressed on the need to create awareness among the people about the importance of girl child in the society. More so, it has also asked the officials concerned of the district health department to take necessary measures to prevent female foeticide in the district.

What is worrisome is the fact that decreasing sex ratio is not just creating social imbalance but also resulting in the rise in crime cases in the society, maintained the district administration officials. Keeping in view the present state of the male-female sex ratio of the district, the Champawat district administration has called upon the officials concerned of the district health department, Anganwadi  workers and education department to jointly launch awareness campaign for protecting girl's rights in the society.
