Due to the incessant rains and landslide, many roads in the mountainous districts of the Garhwal region were blocked for traffic. Though some of these roads were cleared, some are yet to be cleared even to allow

pedestrian traffic. Garhwal commissioner Subardhan claimed that out of the 1,254 damaged roads in the Garhwal region only 267 roads are yet to be cleared.

Rishikesh-Rudraprayag and Rudraprayag-Badrinath national highway upto Govindghat has been opened for traffic while Rudraprayag-Kedarnath national highway upto Agastyamuni and Rishikesh-Uttarkashi national highway upto Dharasu bend were opened for transportation.

The Badkot-Yamunotri motor road is blocked in Vadiya and Kharidi but small vehicles can move upto Vadiya. Subardhan said that the roads from Agastyamuni to Kund, Kund to Sammi village, Rampur to Sonprayag are damaged but the pedestrian route from Kund to Rampur is open. On the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway, the stretches at Umatta, Tangari, Badanu, lambagad are blocked but the Karnprayag-Pokhri and Nandprayag-Ghat roads are open. He said that Karnprayag-Ranikhet-Kathodam, Pauri- Srinagar, Pauri-Dugadda-Najibabad, Pauri- Devprayag, Ramnagar-Bubakhal, Kalagarh-Kotdwar, Chamba- Rishikesh, Chamba- Mussoorie, Ghansali-Tipri- New Tehri motor roads are open to traffic.

The Border Roads Organisation and the National Highways Authority are responsible for the construction and maintenance of national highways in Garhwal. According to official sources, Uttarakhand has different construction divisions for the plains and mountainous regions in both Garhwal and Kumaon regions.

The Roorkee division of NHA is responsible for the construction of highways in plains while the Dhumakot division in Pauri district and Badkot division in Uttarkashi are responsible for the construction of highways in the mountainous regions of Garhwal.

In Kumaoun region, the Haldwani division of NHA is responsible for the construction of highways in plains, while Almora division is responsible for the construction of highways in mountainous region. In addition to this the BRO director general is in the charge of the construction of the national highways on the Char Dham Yatra circuit.

It is the general opinion of the locals and visitors that due to the unsatisfactory level of progress in the construction of the highways on Char Dham routes, the landslides continue to block roads while the State government has not taken any action regarding the danger zones identified.
