Several localities in Doon witness regular waterlogging

Published on:

Though the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun has so far undertaken various measures so far to prevent waterlogging in various parts of the State capital during the rains, this problem continues to plague various localities of Dehradun.

Dumping of garbage in roadside drains, lack of timely cleaning and unplanned urban development are considered to be the main reasons behind this problem. According to observers, the delay in implementation of the Rs 24.6 crore solid waste management project being undertaken under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) is also one of the major factors preventing the desired level of civic sanitation from being achieved in the State capital which in turn is a major factor responsible for water logging. The Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli has himself stated that lack of coordination between the MCD, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority, Public Works Department and other departments concerned is responsible for unplanned urbanisation which causes various civic woes including water logging. Encroachment on roadside drains, blocking of natural drainage channels for rain water by residents and prominent commercial institutions is also responsible for water logging but the authorities concerned have so far not been able to address any of these factors effectively.
