Several jails of Uttarakhand are facing crunch of on-premise medical facilities. The jail officials may not be able to provide vital medical services to the jail inmates in case of emergencies. At present, in case an inmate requires medical attention, the jail authorities inform the doctors of local hospitals and after their proper checking and frisking at jail gate, the doctors are allowed to enter the jail premise to administer necessary treatment. Jails in Chamoli, Tehri, Pauri and other locations in Uttarakhand lack medical facilities. According to a Pauri jail official, doctor and pharmacists visit the jail daily for two to three hours. “No doctor has been deputed permanently in the jail and in case of an emergency, we are not capable of providing immediate medical care to the person in need of it,” he added.
