Set up nursing college, says GDMC's Dr Gupta

Published on:

There is a need to set up a nursing college in the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), said the Principal of the GDMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta while speaking at a programme organised by the Uttarakhand Nurses Association on the occasion of International Nurses day here Friday.

He said that though there is a State nursing college in State capital, the medical college needs to have this facility. Dr Gupta congratulated the nursing community and asked them to follow the path shown by great Florence Nightingale, in the memory of whom the day is celebrated as International Nurses day. He praised the services provided by nurses in smooth functioning of the medical college.

The Medical Superintendent (MS) of the associated hospital of GDMC, Dr K K Tamta said that the day acts as a reminder that nurses should do their best while serving the patients. He disclosed that he receives many complaints of bad behaviour of nurses from the patients and their attendants. Dr Tamta requested that the nurses despite their hard work schedule should show more empathy while dealing with patients and their relatives. The CMS of female wing of the associated hospital of GDMC, Dr Meenakshi Joshi in her address highlighted the emerging concept of Nurse Physician in which the nurses bridge the gap between the patient and the doctors.

The Joint Director Nursing, R J Singh appreciated the services rendered by the nurses in Uttarakhand. She said that the department has completed the process of promotion of various grades of nurses and all possible efforts would be done for the welfare of nurses.

The President of the Uttarakhand Nurses Services Association, Krishna Rawat exhorted the nurses to follow the path of selfless service shown by Florence Nightingale. She said that the large number of posts of various grades of nurses are vacant in the state health department due to which the patient nurse ratio is highly skewed and workload on nurses is more. Rawat said that the nurses working in the associated hospital of the GDMC are being asked the option of either joining the medical college permanently or return back to the health department. She requested the Principal of the GDMC to increase the retirement age of the nurses who opt for the service of medical college.

On the occasion, the guests felicitated laxmi Punetha for doing a commendable job of serving in the dengue department of associated hospital of GDMC. Many other nurses were also honoured on the occasion.
