The service of collecting segregated garbage has been a big challenge for the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) which has not made much headway till now. The door to door garbage collection has started in the city, but segregating of the garbage issue keeps eluding.
According to sources, if MCD could start collecting segregated garbage the resources can be saved for the Solid Waste Management Plant situated at Shishambada. It may also minimise the littering of waste in the roads of the city.
As per the MCD officials, the civic body has signed a contract with a private company and direction has been given for collecting door to door garbage to it. The company and MCD hence focus on collecting tonnes of garbage from every ward rather than collecting garbage separately.
Speaking of the matter, Naveen Kumar Sadana, member of an activist group, said, “If segregated waste is collected from door to door it might save man power, electricity and energy for the Shishambada solid waste management plant. If this service starts from the source the city can be made cleaner.”
Project head of the Remki, the company entrusted with the door to door collection, Mohit Diwedi said, “We have been given the task of collecting door to door garbage, but collecting segregated waste is a problem for us. We can appoint two workers in one van -the driver and a worker in the truck. The problem is that a single person cannot segregate the waste. This can only be done if the common people start segregating their waste at their home. However, we would try to set up two kinds of dustbins in the van- one for degradable and another for non-bio degradable waste.”
