In view of the residents coming out for Diwali shopping in the city, plain cloth cladded police personnel will be deployed in the market and other crowded areas to apprehend miscreants, said Garhwal Range Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Sanjay Gunjyal after chairing a meeting with range police officers at Police line in Dehradun on Thursday.

Police officers have been directed to strengthen the security in view of the upcoming Diwali festival, he added.

DIG Gunjyal reviewed registered crime cases and directed the police officers to take measures to prevent cases like chain snatching, burglary, murder, loot, dacoity and the like in their jurisdiction.

The police officers were directed to book the miscreants under Gangster Act so that they can be given maximum quantum of punishment for the offences. Gunjyal has directed the police officers to set up temporary police posts for peaceful completion of Char Dham Yatra this year during the winter season as proposed by the State Government recently.

The police officers have been directed to conduct drives against gambling and smuggling of drugs, liquor and other narcotics.

As most of the women come out for Diwali shopping, cases related to chain snatching and thefts tend to increase during the festival, as per statistics. To prevent chain snatching incidents in the market and other busy areas in the city, plain cloth police men would be deployed and things would be monitored by the senior police officers.

The police station officers should conduct verification of residents from time to time in their jurisdiction. Cyber crimes are increasing day by day and police officers should take measures to solve the cases lodged without delay. Cases related to land disputes are also on the rise in the state capital and police officers have been directed to initiate steps to stop such offences in the district.

Special Investigation Team, which is specialised in dealing with land- related cases, has been formed at the range level. SIT is headed by an inspector and 21 policemen.

Policemen will be trained to deal with land- related cases effectively and offenders will be booked under Gangster Act,

he added. In view of the increasing accident cases, police officers were directed to ensure that heavy vehicles are allowed to enter the city area during the specified time.

Policemen were directed to seize and cancel licenses of the drivers who are responsible for the major accidents, resulting in human casualty. He has directed the police officers to intensify police patrolling apart from instilling sense of security among the residents.

Security should be strengthened and police should be vigilant in their assigned areas. He directed the police officers to make community policing more effective.

Beat police should be assigned to complete verification of residents in their assigned areas. Gunjyal directed the police officers to make Homicide Investigation Cell more effective and action should be taken to solve the pending cases in the district.
