Security guard assualted, ATM loot bid foiled

Published on:

Some unidentified persons assaulted a security guard at an ATM of the IDBI bank with a hammer at Saharanpur Chowk making a failed attempt to steal cash from the ATM on Saturday night.

The violent nature of the crime and the impunity with which it was committed has given the citizens and authorities cause for concern. Dehradun senior superintendent of police Nivedita Kukreti along with other police officers and personnel reached the incident site and inspected the ATM and surroundings. She directed the police officers to take necessary measures to crack this case. later DIG Garhwal Range Pushpak Jyoti also reached the IDBI ATM to inspect the crime scene.

Kotwali police station officer said that it is not clear so far how many criminals were involved in the assault on the security guard. The injured security guard Rajendra, a resident of Vasant Vihar, who was initially admitted to the Doon medical college hospital has been referred to a higher centre. A case under appropriate sections of IPC has been registered against unidentified persons in the police station. Footage from closed circuit televsision cameras installed in the locality has been checked by the police team. They are working on several angels to crack the case. However, no concrete leads had been found regarding the case so far, he added.

Recently police had recovered a body of an engineer, a resident of Bageshwar on the road near the Clock Tower. The youth had one bullet in his head and later police cracked the case stating that it was a suicide and not a murder. But, various aspects of the case have remained unclear with the father of the victim questioning the police theory and opining that his son was murdered. Irrespective of that, questions were raised at the claims of police patrolling in the night as two hotel workers were purportedly able to dump the body on the road during the night without their action being noticed then or the body being spotted later by the police.

Observers state that the earlier death of the youth and the latest attack on a security guard have exposed the claims made by the police about patrolling during the night in the provisional state capital though senior police officers claimed to have directed their subordinates to intensify patrolling in their jurisdictional limit.

It appears as if the police are focusing more on routine traffic work than on putting a check on crimes. One after another incident of crimes in the heart of the city at clock tower and Saharanpur road has exposed police’s claim of providing security to its residence.
