The green revolution was an immediate solution to hunger and was not able to solve the problem in its entirety due to which it has now become vital to find solutions for problems like need to increase food grain production, nutrition security and related issues. Noted scientist Dr KV Raman said this while delivering a lecture on the fourth day of the ongoing foundation week in the GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology on Thursday.
Speaking on the subject of new horizons in the sphere of agricultural education, Raman stressed on the need for adoption of integrated natural resource management, integrated gene management, new techniques for farming, value enhancement and primary food processing, production system management, post harvest technologies, food quality and security in order to make farming sustainable. Emphasising that is is vital to dwell on complete agriculture system, the senior scientist said that it is essential to meet basic requirements like productive soil, increased production with decreased water by increasing water-utilisation efficiency, mixed crop farming, pest management, socio-economic stability and value chain of agricultural products.
In the coming days, innovative education, inter-subject research and science and technology will be the need of the university, he said. Raman also stressed on the need for keeping the curriculum up to date with changes as and when needed and skill development as per new technologies among other aspects. Technology should be integrated with the education in addition to which, focus should also be laid on increasing interaction with national and international universities, he said. The university vice chancellor Dr Mangala Rai and other officials of the university also expressed their views on the occasion.
