The vice-chairman of the Rural Development and Migration Commission, Sharad Singh Negi visited the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST). He held a detailed discussion with the director general of UCOST Rajendra Dobhal about the role of science and technology in preventing migration from the State.
In view of the State’s particular geographical conditions, science and technology have an important role in the workplace of the State’s rural development and migration commission. The effective application of science and technology can help mitigate migration from the rural mountainous regions, for which science-based plans need to be made.
Rajendra Dobhal said that efforts will be undertaken to provide science and technology for the development of rural areas, which will help in resolving the local problems of the State. This in turn will help in reducing the trend of migration from the rural areas of the State, he said.
It is pertinent to mention here that various factors including employment opportunities, level of essential and civic facilities and other aspects specific to the mountainous and rural regions of the State have fuelled migration which has continued after creation of Uttarakhand State in 2000. Observers point out that science and technology has the major role to play in tackling issues vital for addressing migration like revival of agriculture, mitigation and management of disaster and provision of access to health, education and other facilities for the residents of rural areas.
