The department of Ophthalmology of GDMC is performing 15 to 20 eye operations a day of the patients which are mostly poor.
The department has only one Assistant Professor Dr Sushil Ojha and one Senior Resident (SR), Dr Manu Bharadwaj. The health department shifted three doctors, Dr Roopleen, Dr Sweta and Dr Akansha out of this hospital and posted them at Gandhi Centenary Eye Hospital (GCEH) in October. Interestingly the eye department is managing a big OPD, doing operations and issuing medical certificates despite of the fact that only two doctors are posted here. In December 2016, 254 major and 45 minor surgeries (total 299) were performed by these doctors while 283 operations were performed by the department in December 2015 when four eye surgeons were posted. On the other hand the eye surgery in GCEH has still not started even after three months of its inauguration.
