'SC gives 4 months time to improve SC, ST hostel condition'

The Supreme Court of India has given a time of four months to the Central and State Governments to improve the conditions of the SC and ST hostels of the country. The State president of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Ramakant Srivastava informed this while addressing media persons on Tuesday.

He said that ABVP had filed a Public Interest litigation (PIl) in the Supreme Court in the year 2007, in which many suggestions for improving the conditions of hostels were given. He said that SC has asked the centre and state governments to ensure that the conditions in these hostels are improved and for this a time period of four months is given and file an affidavit in the matter.

The ABVP leader said that SC and ST students should be informed about the scholarships and other welfare schemes. He said that the scholarships for the poor students should be based on the price index.

Srivastava demanded that the issuance of caste certificates to SC and ST students should be made hassle free. He said that it should be ensured that admission in the college and hostel should be done simultaneously and the entire process is transparent. Srivastava said that admissions in the hostels should be planned afresh depending upon the student strength by the state government.
