The regular augmentation in the number of vehicles in the State capital is becoming major cause of traffic woes in the absence of new parking space for the vehicles.

As per comparitive data provided by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Dehradun, in 2013, the registration of the number of vehicles, especially two-wheelers, have considerably increased from the 2012. In 2012, around 36,643 two wheelers, including 17,870 scooters and total 18,773 motor cycles, were registered at the regional transport office of Dehradun. In 2013 till December 30, around 37,149 two-wheelers, including 20,093 scooters and 17,056 motor cycles, were registered at the RTO department.

Meanwhile, a slight decline was noticed in the number of four wheelers registered at RTO department in 2013.  In the year 2012 total 15,471 four wheelers including all types of private cars was registered at RTO while in 2013 the number has decreased to 13,276.

Although the number of vehicles are increasing evey year but nothing much is done to provide sufficient parking space for these vehicles.

Mussorrie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), VC, R Meenakshi Sundaram, stated that  MDDA is only responsible for implementing the regulation and don't have any right pass any new laws in respect to the parking norm. He stated that there is certain specified norms mention in the bylaws of the MDDA according to which there are different parking rules for the residential areas, unit group residential areas and the commercial areas.

According to the Town Planner at MDDA, RG Singh, lastly the bylaws was revised in the year 2011 and same parking norms are being followed till date which was issued in that year.

As per the norms mentioned for the commercial areas two cars are allowed to be parked in the 100 square meter of covered areas and similarly different rules apply for the residential and housing areas.

He also stated that in order to resolve the parking problem in the state capital, MDDA has recently constructed a parking areas with the capacity of 400 vehicles at Dispensary road and with 600 capacity at the Clock Tower.
