Sanitation workers on strike, garbage piles up on Doon roads

Published on:

The three-day strike by municipal sanitation workers and other factors have caused a considerable deterioration in the level of civic sanitation in the State capital.

Piles of garbage on roadside in various localities of Dehradun have not been cleared for nearly two weeks though locals complain that the municipal officials have been assuring them repeatedly that the trash will be cleared.

The sanitation workers of Municipal Corporation of Dehradun are on a three-day long strike in support of their demands including regularisation. However, even before their strike began the trash deposited from the overflowing roadside drains on the road during the rainy spell about a week ago has not yet been cleared. In violation of the rules, the burning of waste has also continued unabated in roadside drains and municipal garbage containers.

locals complain that the Doon Valley Waste Management company is not emptying the full garbage containers on time which is further worsening the sanitation condition in various localities.

Garbage has been piled along the roadside drains in various parts of Dehradun like at Subhash Road. Residents in this area complain that for more than a week they have been telephoning municipal staff for about a week for getting the garbage cleared.

Though the officials have repeatedly assured that the garbage will be removed, this has not been done yet. MCD sanitation supervisor Sanjay Kumar said that the lack of Nullah gangs is preventing the timely cleaning of the roadside drains.

It is worth mentioning here that with more than 200 metric tonnes of solid municipal waste being generated in Dehradun every day, the deteriorating level of civic sanitation caused by absence of a proper waste disposal system has become a major problem affected the environment of the city and health of the people. If the improperly dumped garbage is not cleared soon, the locals will once again have to face water logging with the Met office forecasting rain in the coming days.
