Sanitation worker held as DNA matches with inmate's foetus

A sanitation worker of the Nari Niketan in Dehradun was arrested by the police after his DNA sample positively matched that of the three-month-old foetus recovered during the investigation into alleged rape and abortion of an inmate.

The police special investigation team formed to ascertain the alleged violations in Nari Niketan arrested 54-year-old Gurdas from Haridwar. The accused had been transferred from the Dehradun Nari Niketan to the special home at Roshnabad in Haridwar after serious irregularities were exposed at the shelter home in Dehradun.

Dehradun senior superintendent of police, Dr Sadanand Date said that the SIT led by SP (City) Ajay Singh arrested Gurdas after his DNA matched positively with that of the three-month old dead foetus recovered earlier in Dudhali forest area during investigation of the case.

The SIT had earlier collected DNA samples of all the males working in Nari Niketan and had sent these to the forensic science laboratory (FSl) at Panditwadi in Dehradun. The FSl report received on Tuesday established the DNA match after which the police arrested Gurdas under section 376 (2)(d) of IPC from Haridwar on Wednesday.

It should be mentioned here that during investigations the SIT has so far arrested nine persons working at the shelter home. The persons arrested so far include Kedarpuram resident Nari Niketan nurse Kiran Nautiyal along with Nari Niketan teachers including Raipur resident Chandrakala Kshetri, Varanasi (UP) native Samanigar, Anita Maindola and class four employee Rajpur resident Krishna Kanchha, former superintendent Meenakshi Pokhriyal, Teliwala resident Mohammad Hasim and Nawada resident lalit Singh Bisht. They were booked under different sections of IPC and sent to Suddhowala jail after being produced in the court.

Earlier, the district court had granted the SIT permission to go for DNA matching with the dead foetus based on blood samples of the suspects. Investigation in this case had started after Nehru Colony police station sub-inspector Krishna Jayara had registered a report in the same police station on November 27 last year with a case being registered against unidentified Nari Niketan workers (FIR number- 245/15) under sections 376(2)(d)/218/201/120b and 34 of IPC.
