Roorkee is again in the news for wrong reasons. In a ghastly incident, a sanitation supervisor of Nagar Nigam and resident of Rishi Colony near Ram Nagar in Roorkee, was shot dead by two unidentified two-wheeler-borne persons in the city in broad daylight on Monday  while he was going to attend his duties. A country-made revolver was the murder weapon, police said.

According to the police, some old enmity with  the notorious Rathi gang could have goaded the miscreants to gun down the Nagar Nigam employee. They threatened him earlier. Subsequently, police protection was provided to him which was recently withdrawn.

Speaking to The Pioneer, SP rural Parmendra Dobhal said, “Around 8 in the morning, two bike-borne miscreants  came and shot at Basant Kumar in Ram Nagar area. The bullet pierced through his stomach. He was rushed to the civil hospital from where the doctors referred him to higher medical centre. Soon after being admitted at the hospital, he succumbed and died.”

Notably, Basant Kumar had been threatened earlier too by Parveen Balmiki who is a known sharp -shooter of Sunil Rathi gang. He is  now behind bars in connection with some murder cases. last year Dehradun police had arrested some members of Rathi gang who are learnt to have revealed during interrogation that they had plans to murder Basant Kumar.

The relatives of the deceased protested outside the civil hospital, alleging  delay in  the procedures of autopsy. The pharmacist refused to meet the relatives which irked the villagers and the family members of Basant Kumar, it  is learnt.
