Sanitation problem in Pauri continues to deteriorate

Published on:

Despite nearly two years having passed since the National Green Tribunal (NGT) gave its order regarding the disposal of garbage and waste products, the State Government, district administration and the Nagar Palika Parishad Pauri have been sitting on it. The level of civic sanitation in Pauri town continues to deteriorate with the municipal waste being dumped haphazardly in the open around the surroundings of Pauri town.

The final order was passed in September 2014 by NGT when the legal representative of the State Government stated that the State had land for the disposal of the garbage and waste products.

It was then that the NGT principal bench New Delhi asked Nagar Palika Pauri to use the particular site as proposed in the tribunal by the Uttarakhand Government as  the temporary trenching  ground around two years ago.

Himalaya Environment and Employment Cooperative Society ltd president Ashok Thapliyal said that he will again raise the issue with NGT  for the violation of MSW by the civic body during the final hearing to be held on the petition filed by the outfit.

The civic body remaining  in a State of sleep, garbage and waste products are being indiscriminately dumped and burnt in the forest area and Gadhera surrounding Pauri to the detriment of the people’s health.

The residents of Pauri town say that NGT should take suo motto notice of the open defiance of its order by the civic body at the earliest and take corrective steps to stem the tide.
