Sanitation, employment and education are missions for the State Government. The State Urban Development and Housing Minister Madan Kaushik said this while speaking at a workshop on sanitation here on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Cabinet Minister said that sanitation, employment and education should not be viewed separately. The sanitation programme is also providing opportunities for employment.
Apart from disposal of garbage, solid waste management can also be used for generation of power and producing plastic. For this purpose, companies should come forward with CSR initiatives and Non Governmental organisations should come forward as role models. Citing the example of Indore city- which leads in sanitation- Kaushik said that there the big companies under CSR and NGOs have established coordination with the local body and committed themselves to help make the city clean. Stating that capacity building is needed for ensuring desired level of sanitation in a city, he reiterated the proactive role which NGOs and companies under their CSR initiatives can play towards this end. He said that through solid waste management, the production of manure had been started in Joshimath during 2010. In Tehri district, an NGO is involved in door to door collection of garbage, making of garbage collection centre and the production of manure. In the coming years, solid waste management will be implemented in the entire state, the minister averred.
