Safety wall collapse in rain puts residents into trouble

The safety wall along Rispana River at Bhagat Singh Colony collapsed on Tuesday morning following incessant rain since Monday evening in Dehradun. Water entered houses and shops up to two feet and residents faced a tough time in removing it with buckets.

In some houses and shops located in low lying area of the colony, water entered up to as high as three feet, said local residents. Noorjahan, local resident said that when she got up at around 5 am she found water  filling her home. The entire locality was water logged. "Collapse of safely wall of Rispana River, narrow roads and improper drainage system led to water logging in the locality, " she said, adding that the one feet deep water damaged  rice, flour, sugar and other food items kept on ground and in the fridge.

Akash Diary owner Sajveer Singh Pal said, “Water up to three feet deep entered our shop at around 4 am on Tuesday and large quality of milk and milk products were destroyed," he added. "The water level decreased after 9 am and I had to struggle a lot to clean up the mess. The good news is that safety wall along the river is being constructed by the irrigation department under the supervision of local MlA Rajkumar. Had department officer repaired this safety wall earlier, locals would not have faced such problems," he added.

A shopkeeper said, “My shop was situated on the opposite bank of the Rispana and food grains and other eatables costing about Rs 5,000 were destroyed by water in the shop. I rushed to the shop at around 5.30 am after being informed by neighbour about collapse of safety wall. I found that water  had entered my shop and could only watch it damaging my goods".
