To ensure proper enforcement of traffic laws in the district, the regional transport office (RTO) of Dehradun is planning to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at various locations in the district. The RTO has already sent a proposal to the State government to get approval for the installation of such cameras in at least 10 locations in the initial phase. In the past few months, the number of road accidents has considerably increased in the district and as per the authorities, overspeeding and driving vehicles in the wrong direction are two prominent causes of most of these accidents. The authorities have even identified some accident prone areas in the district where accidents frequently occur throughout the year due to traffic violations. In order to monitor the movements of vehicles to ensure proper implementation of traffic laws and penalise offenders for any traffic violations, the officials informed that the RTO is planning to install 20 ANPR cameras in 10 locations across the district in the initial phase. Informing about these cameras, the regional transport officer (enforcement) Sandeep Saini said that ANPR cameras are used to detect and penalise traffic violations. "These cameras can easily detect traffic violations like overspeeding and driving while using mobile phones. These can read the number plates of the vehicles too. When the camera detects any violation in traffic rules in a certain location, the camera which will be connected with the transport department's software will instantly send a challan to the owner of the registered vehicle," stated Saini. He also disclosed that the RTO has sent a proposal to the State Government for the approval to install ANPR cameras in the district and once the approval is granted, officials will go further with the plan.
