Published on:

Rash driving, violating traffic rules and other blatant violations of  traffic regulations have become a routine feature in Dehradun nowadays. But such traffic violation increases with a considerable high rate especially during the New Year Eve.

Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Dinesh Chandra Pathoi mentioned that RTO officials used to conduct such drives every year during the December 31 night. But owing to the staff crunch at Regional Transport Office (RTO), officials are planning to conduct their checking drive in coordination with the Dehradun police, he added.

He also said that around two to three RTO officials would be deployed along with the police personnel and checking drive would be organized at major places of the town.

Possibly the drive would start during the evening time and last till 9:30 on the December 31 night and traffic violators would be penalized.

According to ARTO (Enforcement), RP Rathore though, checking drives are conducted in the town on regular basis but officials would be asked to adopt a bit stricter action especially on December 31. He added that such checking drives are the routine affairs for the RTO officials and regular challans are also imposed on the traffic violators but seeing the crowd and safety concern of the general public stricter drive would be taken

by the RTO officials on December 31.

However, the RTO officials need to be more alert and conduct stricter checking drive on such occasion like

New Year.

RTO officials are deployed at several places of the town to check such traffic nuisance. Cases of rash driving and other related traffic violation generally increase on the 31st as celebration is on at most of the places in the town.

People of younger age group are usually seen violating the traffic rules on such occasion. Same traffic rules would be applied for all and no discrimination would be

done while conducting the checking drive.

Rathore said that on normal days also people, who are found violating traffic rules like using mobile phones during driving, are liable for a penality of `1,000 and those driving without helmet are charged with `100 as penalty.

Meanwhile, an RTO official informed that around 800 challans are imposed on monthly basis in respect to the traffic violations.

But during the December 31, the number cases increases to around 10- 15 percent. He added that generally on normal days around 25-30 violators are penalized but during the December 31 night this

numbers reaches to 35-40.
