Role of police under scrutiny in gang rape case

Published on:

Mystery shrouds the role of Dalanwala police as far as the notorious gang rape case involving a 17-year-old girl is concerned. They continued throwing a veil on the case for reasons best known to them.  However, Araghar police claimed to have registered a zero FIR regarding the same on Monday and it would be transferred to police station concerned of Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh, after the primary investigation is completed.

Interestingly, Dehradun SSP Pushpak Jyoti interacted with the media persons for around an hour at his office on Tuesday noon, but did not care to disclose anything, further deepening the mystery. The question is - Was the Dehradun district police head unaware of the same or was he too involved in keeping things away from glareIJ

Observers opined that police are registering the cases they are on the brink of cracking. FIRs in the police stations are not generally registered unless senior police officers instruct the police station in-charges. Placed thus in such a predicament, the aggrieved persons have no option but to roam around offices of senior cops, they added.

The Aaraghar police post in-charge, Ashok Rathore, said that police had received a phone call, stating a minor was lying unconscious somewhere on EC Road. With the help of 108 Ambulance, she was admitted at Coronation Hospital on Sunday. After she got back consciousness, she recounted the incident. Police learnt that she was gang-raped in Ghaziabad and thrown in Dehradun.

According to police, she was unaware of how she had reached Dehradun. later, her family was informed about the incident. Rathore said that victim’s mother had submitted a complaint in the Araghar police post and a case under sections 363 and 376d of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual offences (POCSO) Act was registered against three persons — Arasi, Iqbal and Aarif, natives of Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh).

Police teams have been formed and they are investigating the case. The local police station of Ghaziabad where incident took place has been informed about this incident too, he added. In her written complaint, the victim’s mother stated that Arasi, who lives in their locality in Ghaziabad, reached her home on May 2 and told her that his mother had been ill for the past few days.

Moved, she allowed her daughter to go along with him to his home to work there as domestic help. However, Arasi had brought the minor at a hotel at Indirapuram, Ghaziabad where he had raped her on May 2, she alleged. As the girl insisted to go back home in the evening, he called his brother Iqbal and his cousin Aarif to drop her home. However, things happened differently as both Iqbal and Aarif hired a car, drugged her through cold drink and raped her at an unknown place in the forest area.

According to victim’s mother, after her daughter came in her senses, she found herself in the Coronation Hospital, Dehradun. Dalanwala Circle Officer (CO) Pramod Kumar said that the survivor was treated in Coronation Hospital and she was sent back home thereafter. Now she is recovering fast, he said, adding that she would be brought in Dehradun to have her statement recorded under section 164 of CrPC before a magistrate. After the completion of formality of the case, FIR will be transferred to police station concerned in Ghaziabad, he added.
