Roadside paid parking system set to be introduced in Dehradun

Parking becoming a major problem for Dehradun, a public sector undertaking (PSU) has been roped in to manage roadside paid parking system to be introduced in the crowded places of the city. Following the successful trial, the roadside paid parking system would now be introduced, informed Dehradun Superintendent of Police (SP) Traffic lokeshwar Singh on Monday. He, further, said that Bridge, Ropeway, Tunnel and other Infrastructure Development Corporation of Uttarakhand limited (BRIDCUl) would manage the system after it is introduced. “The system would be introduced in a few days in several areas which are bearing the brunt of the haphazard parking- triggered traffic problems,” he added.

While dwelling in details on the upcoming system, SP said that the vehicles would be allowed to be parked on the unused space beyond the white line drawn to mark the edge of the roads in the crowded places where the traffic pressure is heavy. “ On Road Street Parking (ORSP) as envisaged by us would hopefully go a long way in freeing the roads in the bustling market places of the problem of traffic congestion. At the same time, it would bring revenue as it is a paid parking facility,” he said.

He, further, said that another thing which is also on trial is Intelligent Traffic light System (ITlS). “This trial might prove successful too. If so we would introduce it on the regular basis. We are sure that the ITlS’s introduction would help decongestion of traffic when it peaks during the time of the vacations of schools and colleges. The pressure turns huge when the cars coming from outside add to the load of the local cars,” he said.

The technology used in ITlS is the sensor system type.  When the traffic on one side is high the system would signal it to stop and let the one on the other side which is lighter to move. As per the prevailing system, the traffic light time limit is being fixed by the persons who man them manually. Things are naturally not as perfect as they should be. Now, the new technology-fed system  has been put on trial  at Niranjanpur Mandi areas and the feedback is good. After the completion of the trial, we will install it at every important intersection across the city,” SP Traffic said.

The trial of the three cameras installed- Red light Violation Detector (RlVD), Speed Detection System (SDS) and Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR)-has proved  successful too, he said, adding that they would now be  installed in various intersections and the main areas for better security and better traffic management. “We would decide soon the places where these cameras are to be installed and things would be completed in a few days,” he said.
