Riverside residents wary of monsoon in city

Published on:

Contrary to most people anticipating monsoon, those living near the Rispana and Bindal rivers are wary of the rains since their homes fill up with water during heavy rainfall.

They allege that as always the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has not prepared for the season and ultimately residents will have to bear the brunt of monsoon.

They also said that even after repeated attempts to elicit the attention of officials to the issue, no concrete solution has been given to the people so far.

When asked about it a resident of Suraj Basti near Dalanwala, Nitu said, “During heavy rainfall water enters our houses in no time. We face a lot of difficulties during this season as sometimes water level rises in our home which becomes very difficult for us to tackle.  Last year also we suffered damage due to rainfall. It is important that officials do something regarding this problem experienced every year.” Another resident from Rispana riverside, Nazim Khan said, “It is sad that every year we have to face this problem. Last year during heavy rainfall we were in a situation requiring us to shift to another place temporarily.

We called MCD for help but without the help of the local residents, it was impossible for the workers to drain the water and sludge from the house. We don’t see much preparation by MCD this year either.”

However, the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said, “Considering the monsoon season in consideration we started the cleaning of Rispana and Bindal in advance. The problem of waterlogging, especially in the houses will not be a problem this year.” Meanwhile, the municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey and MCD officials on Tuesday inspected the work done in in waterlogging prone areas of the city.  They inspected work done at Astley Hall, Rajpur Road, Prince Chowk, Gandhi Park and Doon Hospital.
