'Risky' trek route seeing footfalls again

Published on:

The silence reigning on the Himalayan Gangotri-Kalindi-Badrinath trekking track has been finally broken, as the high altitude region is seeing footfalls with the arrival of five trekking groups after a lull of almost two years.

The trek route is deemed risky, given several accidents that have been occuring here at regular intervals.

The 12-day-long trek from Gangotri to Badrinath cuts through snow-covered hills. The Kalindi pass is the highest spot located at 5,000 meter from the sea level.

One can move along this trek only under guidance from professional guides and experienced porters. For the past two years, several groups have returned midway.

Vasukital, Sita Glacier and Kalindi Pass are considered the most precarious points.

However, two youths from Delhi have already covered the entire trek this year, braving the grim odds. 95 tourists belonging to five groups have also embarked on the trek.

The foresters said since the weather looks good this year, a large number of trekkers are expected to arrive.
