Rising road mishaps: 39 driving licences cancelled

In view of increasing cases of road accidents due to drunken driving, Dehradun Regional Transport Office has cancelled driving licenses of 39 caught driving under the influence by the police about six months ago. These 39 cancelled licenses include 15 commercial vehicle licenses, said assistant regional transport officer Sandeep Saini on Wednesday.

Observers opine that there has been an increase in road accident cases in the state capital in recent years. Statistics reveal that many of the road accidents here occur due to drunken driving. Though authorities claim to have taken several measures to minimise road accidents caused by drunken driving,  this problem continues in Dehradun and elsewhere in the State.

Saini said that the department had received licenses of 39 persons caught for drunken driving about six months ago. The license holders were issued notice but some of them did not reply while some answered albeit unsatisfactorily according to the law.

“We have cancelled these licenses apart from which notices have been issued to 50 persons caught recently for drunken driving by the police. If they fail to reply satisfactorily then their licenses will be cancelled,” he added

Saini further said that persons whose licenses have been cancelled will have to submit a fresh application for driving license and will be issued learners' license for six months. Persons seeking commercial driving license will also be issued learners' license for six month and then they will be able to apply for driving license and after a year.
