Amid spree of resignations of Congressmen in different parts of the country ostensibly to give free hand to Congress president Rahul Gandhi to revamp the party organisation after the debacle of Lok Sabha polls, the Uttarakhand unit of Congress party is shying away from emulating their counterparts in other parts of the country.
Barring the secretary of the Congress Deep Vohra, who has tendered his resignation, no other leader in the state has shown the guts to relinquishing their position.
Interestingly, the reconstitution of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) is long overdue and the current PCC president is working with the old committee and situation is ideal for the party organisation to follow the general sentiment and resign as proof of their solidarity for the party.
It is learnt that many leaders holding top position in the party organisation in the state are adopting a wait and watch policy in the current situation where Rahul Gandhi is steadfastly sticking to his stand of resigning from the post of party president.
Meanwhile, the PCC president Pritam Singh has embarked on a tour of the Kumaon region of the state. In the tour, Singh is taking feedback from the party leaders on the severe drubbing the party candidates received in the recent Lok Sabha polls.
Apart from Pritam Singh, former chief minister and member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) Harish Rawat is also active politically in the state.
Political observers are of the view that the Congress leaders of Uttarakhand too should take moral responsibility of the Lok Sabha defeat and tender their resignations.
They point out towards the huge margin of defeats of its candidates and the ever increasing vote share of BJP in Uttarakhand in support of their stand.
In the just concluded Lok Sabha elections, BJP won all the five seats by securing a staggering 61 percent of the popular vote. The Congress candidates lagged far behind in all the five seats as they were able to secure only 31.40 percent of the vote polled.
In the three parliamentary constituencies of Nainital- Udham Singh Nagar, Garhwal and Tehri Garhwal, the victory margins of BJP candidates Ajay Bhat, Teerath Singh Rawat and Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah respectively was more than three Lakh.
When contacted, Deep Vohra, who has tendered his resignation from the post of general secretary said, “ By tendering his resignation Rahul Gandhi wanted that everyone should come forward for revamping the party. By resigning ,I have followed my inner voice.’’
However the vice president of the state Congress Surya Kant Dhasmana said that Uttarakhand was the first state to pass a unanimous resolution in which party president Rahul Gandhi was requested to take back his resignation.
On resignations for the party posts, he said that the decision depends on one’s understanding of things.
