Residents complain as trenching ground turns garbage dump

Published on:

Those living near the municipal trenching ground are facing various problems due to the continued dumping of garbage here, though the trenching ground has already reached its maximum capacity. The odour emanating from the dump and health problems experienced by locals have made life difficult for the residents.

Recently, residents of the Hill View apartments had staged a protest against the authorities but the situation has not changed. The residents are demanding that garbage disposal trucks take an alternate route to the trenching ground so as to minimise the number of residents disturbed by the noise during odd hours.

Joint secretary of Hill View apartments residents welfare association DS Bhatia told The Pioneer that they had informed the officials concerned about the problems but the authorities have remained apathetic.

During the protest held recently by residents, various Government officials met them and assured necessary action. But the residents point out that no action has been taken on the assurances given by officials. While visiting the site, Dehrad-un Mayor Vinod Chamoli had also said that trucks could use alternate route if feasible. After visiting the alternate road, Chamoli had said that trucks could be sent through this road.

The residents state that the sub divisional magistrate Sonika had also said that trucks would start using the alternate route in two days but this has not been done yet. The residents are now demanding that garbage disposal trucks should be covered, road should be cleaned regularly, pesticides and disinfectants should be sprayed regularly, dead bodies of animals should not be dumped near homes, no burning of garbage and cleaning of a temple near the trenching ground.
