Report: Girls adopted less than boys in State

Published on:

As per the data by the State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA) girls comprise the majority of children put up for adoption through the agency.

Out of the 50 children adopted from 2016 to the present, 34 were girls and 16 were boys. A majority of these children were in the 0-5 years age group.

However, due to various factors girls tend to get adopted less than boys. A departmental official said, “Fewer girls are adopted in our State.

We face a lot of difficulty facilitating the adoption of a girl child though a boy gets adopted swiftly.” Regarding the reasons for this he said, “We encountered a case wherein a family of academicians rejected a girl child for adoption and waited for a boy.

There is a certain mentality among the people in the State regarding girls which makes facilitating adoption of a girl child tougher especially after she crosses the age of five years.

However, people from other states and foreigners adopt more girls compared to people from our State.” Out of the 50 children who have been adopted so far nine children were adopted by couples based in foreign countries.

Out of these nine children, six were girls and three were boys.“People from various countries including France, Italy and USA among others have adopted children from here.

A proper detailed report of every adopted child living in other countries is given to us every six months. I think that people from our state should change the stereotypical mentality now as girls and boys are both the same,’’ the official added.
