The June 2013 disaster wreaked major destruction and caused near-collapse of the Char Dham Yatra system with drastic drop in the number of pilgrims and tourist. However, with reconstruction and repair coupled with publicity across the nation and abroad, the pilgrimage to the Char Dham shrines appears to have come closer to its earlier volume of pilgrim numbers before the June 2013 disaster. According to information with the Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), in 2013 a total of 4,97,744 people had visited Badrinath while 3,12,701 people had reached Kedarnath. Following the disaster, the number of visitors dropped considerably with 1,80,000 persons visiting Badrinath and 40,832 people visiting Kedarnath in 2014. Gradually, with various efforts including repair and construction of the road network and infrastructural features especially along the pilgrimage circuit, the number of pilgrims further increased with 3,59,146 persons registered to have visited Badrinath with 1,54,430 persons visiting Kedarnath in 2015. In the current year 2016 till September 26, at least 5, 25,744 persons have visited Badrinath with 2,84,080 persons having visited Kedarnath. Observers point out that if one goes by the statistical point of view, the Government has at least some reason to be happy considering the apparent revival of the pilgrimage activity and other related aspects as can be reckoned considering the number of pilgrim arrivals.
